And now a word from Jim.
I wrote this song for my dad, Tony Fitzpatrick, who left us too soon in June of 2019. ZEPHR has played the song a handful of times at shows. And each time, practicing alone in my living room before leaving for the venue, I’d picture myself introducing the song to the audience. I raise my glass, the crowd follows suit, and I declare into the microphone, “To Tony!” The audience responds in an echo, “To Tony!” We all take a drink, and I play out the first notes.
Deep into the heart of the song, I survey the audience. Everyone is having a good, sweaty time. People are smiling, shuffling around, spilling a little beer on the floor. And as I look into the pond of the crowd, I see my dad for one sweet moment, leaning casually on a column, smiling at me, laughing joyously, getting a kick out of the whole damn thing. And with a quick blink of my eyes, he’s gone again. But he leaves the room warmer than it was, and me and the boys really drive the song home.
Anyway, that’s how I always imagined it going down, as I practiced alone at home before those shows. But come showtime, before the song, my nerves would get the best of me. A lump would form in my throat; a heavy ball of grief and fear. And I’d timidly go into the first notes of the song without a word. A quiet dedication erupting into a loud one. But no cheers.
Not yet, at least.
So this morning, the morning of the song’s proper release, and almost a year since we’ve played a show, I sip my coffee with the sunrise, raise my mug skyward, and say,
“To Tony”
